How to Set Up an Indoor Treasure Hunt for Kids

An indoor treasure hunt can work in an apartment, a few rooms, or a whole home. The best route uses places everyone knows and keeps the searching within boundaries an adult has checked.

Choose connected household stops

Use familiar categories of places rather than secret or hard-to-reach corners. A route might pass through shared spaces such as a living room, dining area, or playroom, with one clearly approved stop in each.

Shared rooms A reachable bookshelf shelf, a game shelf, a chair cushion, or the outside of an open toy basket can make a clear destination. Point to one specific object if the room has several similar ones.
Kitchen-adjacent spots Use an adult-approved place such as a clear dining table or the outside of a low cabinet. Keep the route away from food-preparation areas and anything children should not open or touch.
Hallway transitions A picture at child height or a coat hook can connect two shared rooms. Keep the path clear and do not use common apartment hallways or stairwells as a play area.
Bedroom or closet Include these only if the household wants them in the game, the space is open and safe, and the clue does not ask players to search personal belongings. Otherwise, keep the route in shared rooms.

Keep movement simple and unhurried

Sketch the route as a sequence of rooms before choosing exact hiding spots. Prefer a loop or a gentle progression through nearby spaces over repeated backtracking. Keep the route on one level when possible so an adult can supervise without turning stairs into part of the game.

If several children are playing, make the next destination easy to approach together. Avoid narrow doorways, high shelves, and spots that invite everyone to reach or climb at once. In a small home, move between distinct objects rather than trying to make every clue use a different room.

Adapt the hunt for a small home or apartment

A hunt does not need a different room for every clue. Use a few distinct, reachable objects in one shared space, then add an adjacent room only if it is part of the agreed play area. A rug, a specific bookcase shelf, a toy basket, and a clear place at the table can form a complete route.

In an apartment, keep clues inside your own unit unless an adult has explicitly arranged a safe, permitted space. Do not send children into shared halls, stairwells, elevators, neighboring units, or outside to find a note.

Make nearby stops distinct Name a particular shelf, cushion, basket, or chair so two clues do not point to the same vague area.
Use one-level movement A compact loop through connected shared spaces is easier to supervise than a route that depends on stairs or narrow passageways.
Keep the search in bounds Tell players which rooms and objects are included, and keep private or storage areas out of the route.

Hide clues safely, not impossibly

Choose stable, reachable surfaces: beside a book, on an empty game shelf, on a cushion that lifts easily, or on the outside of a familiar storage basket. Keep the note visible once the destination is understood; do not bury it under belongings or put it inside a container that players should not open.

Stand where a player will stand and check that the note can be seen and reached without moving furniture, climbing, or searching through personal items. Keep it dry and away from pets, food, or anything that might be thrown out.

Keep these household hazards outside the route

Choose only places the adult hosting the hunt has checked and approved. A clue should never ask a child to open, move, climb on, or reach into something that is unsafe or private. When in doubt, choose another stop.

Heat and hot surfaces Keep clues away from stoves, ovens, fireplaces, heaters, hot pans, and appliances that may be warm. Never put a clue inside an operating or heated appliance.
Chemicals and tools Do not use cleaning supplies, pesticides, fuels, sharp tools, power tools, knives, or storage areas that contain them.
Medicine Never hide a clue with medicine or in a medicine cabinet, drawer, or container. Do not use food or pill packaging as a prop.
Appliances and cords Keep clues out of appliances and away from moving parts, electrical outlets, and cords. Do not ask children to open or operate an appliance.
Water Keep the route away from bathtubs, pools, buckets, sinks, and other water-filled areas. A clue should not require leaning over or reaching into water.
Unstable furniture Do not place notes on wobbly shelves, rolling chairs, folding furniture, or anything that could tip when touched.
Locked or private spaces Exclude locked rooms, private bedrooms, closets, cabinets, and personal belongings unless the household has explicitly approved a specific safe spot.
Climbing and high reaches Keep every clue within easy reach from the floor. Do not use counters, high shelves, windowsills, furniture to stand on, or places behind heavy objects.

Make each clue discoverable but not obvious

The clue should be findable once the destination is understood. A note partly visible beside the correct book or resting on a basket is usually more satisfying than one buried under a pile of belongings.

Use one consistent clue format and number the backs during setup. Keep the next note at the place the current clue names; that small habit prevents an otherwise good indoor route from breaking.

Make a rainy-day hunt easy to start

For a rainy-day version, choose a short route through two or three shared spaces or a few clear objects in one room. Use scrap paper, one clue at each stop, and a small final surprise or a family activity as the treasure. Put the first clue out when the play area is ready.

A quick example is a start card at the rug, then the bookcase, toy basket, and a final note that points to a shared treasure spot. The route can be done entirely on one level and does not need extra decorations.

Test the route at child height

Hide the notes, then begin at the exact starting point and follow the printed wording in order. Check sight lines from where players will stand, reachable height, clear passage between rooms, and whether each phrase could point to more than one object. Do not make the note so hidden that the route becomes a search through drawers or piles.

Can players stay inside the agreed play area?
Can players reach each clue without climbing, running, squeezing behind furniture, or moving a heavy object?
Does every clue point to the exact place where the next note has been hidden?
Are heat, chemicals, tools, medicine, appliances, water, unstable furniture, locked/private spaces, and climbing completely outside the route?
Can an adult quickly find every note and name the next stop if a clue goes missing?

Use clues that name the room, not just a mystery
