Treasure Hunt Clues for Kids: Types, Examples & Tips

A clue should make the next safe place feel satisfying to find. It does not need to be a perfect poem or a trick question. Start with the hiding spot, choose a clue style the players can understand, and test whether the wording points where you intend.

Start with the destination, then write backward

Choose a safe, familiar hiding spot first. Then write one clue that points to that exact place. This keeps a clever line from leading somewhere unsafe or sending players to several possible locations.

Keep a numbered route list for setup. The clue at stop one should lead to the note at stop two, and the final clue should lead to the treasure—not to an extra note that is missing.

Simple, direct clues

A direct clue names the object or gives a clear action. Use one when the hunt is just starting, the group is moving between rooms, or you want to keep the route flowing. Clear does not mean boring: a friendly voice can still make a simple direction feel like part of the story.

Riddles and descriptive clues

A riddle uses a recognizable feature of a place or object. One defining detail is usually enough; stacking several metaphors can make the clue feel like a guessing game with no fair answer.

Rhymes

A rhyme can give clues a playful rhythm, but the destination still needs to be clear. Choose the wording for meaning first, then adjust the sound. Do not let a forced rhyme point toward an unsafe place or a misleading object.

Visual and simple-picture clues

A drawing, printed symbol, or small picture can point to a location without asking players to decode a sentence. A picture of a book can lead to a bookcase; a simple sketch of a chair can narrow the search to one familiar seat.

60 original clues with answers and placement notes

These are independent examples, not a 60-stop route. Each clue names an intended answer and tells you where to put the following note. If a color or object detail does not match your home, replace it with one accurate landmark before printing. The last clue in your own route should point to the treasure, not to another note.

This short example uses familiar, reachable places. The first four clues lead to another clue; the fifth leads to the treasure. Adjust every room, color, and object to match the home, then check the route before play.

Adapt the same destination for different readers

Age is only one factor: consider reading comfort, familiarity with the room, and whether someone will read clues aloud. These examples keep the destination fixed and change how much the clue asks the player to do.

Toy basket — picture or spoken prompt For a child who is not reading yet, show a simple basket picture or say, “Find the open toy basket beside the sofa.”
Toy basket — early reader For a child practicing short sentences, write: “Find the toy basket by the sofa.” Keep the answer visible once they arrive.
Toy basket — confident reader For a reader who enjoys a small inference, try: “When play is done, this open basket waits beside the sofa.” Add “toy basket” as a hint if the room has several baskets.

Make clues gradually more challenging

Difficulty comes from how much a clue asks players to infer, not from using obscure words. Begin with a clear destination, then use a descriptive hint or light wordplay later if the group is enjoying it.

Match the clues to what the players can read and recognize. If they stop making progress, offer a small hint rather than adding a harder clue. Choose a clue style for your players and space

This is a practical tradeoff, not a rule about age. Pick a style based on what the players can read or recognize, how much solving they want, how much time you have to prepare, and whether the destination is easy to show in a small space.

Fix a clue that is too hard—or too easy

If players are stuck, simplify the route to the answer rather than repeating the same clue louder. First name the room, then point out one feature, and finally offer the destination. You can read the clue aloud, replace an unfamiliar word, or add a simple picture.

If a clue is solved immediately, make it more interesting with one accurate detail the players can notice, such as the room, color, or a distinctive nearby object. Keep the answer fair: do not add a misleading rhyme, unfamiliar trivia, or extra hiding places.

A good test is to ask someone who did not write the clue what place they think it names. If they give several reasonable answers, add a detail or rewrite it before the hunt.

Too hard “Where stories sleep” can become “Find the low bookcase in the living room.” Keep the intended stop; make the direction more specific.
Too easy “Go to the chair” can become “Find the yellow-cushion chair in the reading corner.” Add a fair identifier, not a trick.
Never make difficulty depend on Climbing, searching private spaces, opening containers players should not touch, obscure vocabulary, or guessing between several plausible objects.

Sequence and hide clues so the hunt keeps moving

Keep one clue at each planned stop Number the backs while setting up and place each clue only after checking the previous clue points to it.
Make the note visible once players arrive A clue can be tucked beside the right object, but it should not require climbing, opening private spaces, or emptying a drawer.
Use safe destinations Avoid streets, tools, locked or private areas, unsafe climbing, heat sources, chemicals, and any place children should not access.
Test as a player Follow the exact order, read each clue aloud, and replace any wording that points to more than one place.

Common clue mistakes

Too many possible answers Add a room, color, or nearby landmark so the clue narrows the search.
A clue that depends on a forced rhyme Keep the destination accurate even if the line is less poetic.
A hiding place that is hard to reach Move the note to a reachable, stable spot; the challenge should be in solving, not climbing.
An order that only makes sense to the person hiding clues Walk the route from the starting point and confirm each answer leads to the next note.
